WINDHOEK, 24 JUL – Hockey and cricket might form part of the Confederation of School Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) Ball Games this year.
Namibia will host the 2018 ball games that will see more than 1 000 athletes from countries like Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe compete against each other from 22 to 26 August.
Namibia Schools Sports Union national coordinator Solly Duiker on Monday said this year, they are looking at adding the two sport codes that were not part of the ball games before.
He said Botswana has indicated their interest in including cricket in the event.
“At the moment we are looking at having at least three nations to compete in cricket. Botswana have indicated their interest and we have supported them and we are also calling for other nations to include hockey teams,” Duiker said.
He further said they are in the process of finalising their preparations.
“We have a delegation from a number of countries that have confirmed their interest in coming to Namibia over the weekend to see if we are ready to host the games,” he said.
He also said they are going to use the teams selected during the Namibia Sport Commission Youth Games to compete in the championships because at the moment, they do not have funds to host other trials.
“We will only call up players for trial after recommendation by regional coaches who think those athletes are much better than those we have in the squads and deserve to be given a chance,” Duiker said.
He added that the possible venues for the ball games are the Namibia Football Association Technical Centre, the Independence Stadium, Windhoek Gymnasium, DHPS, DTS, Sport Klub Windhoek and the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police College.
The codes that athletes will compete in during the ball games are football (male and female), basketball, netball, hockey, volleyball, cricket, tennis and rugby.
