HARARE, Sept. 14 — Former Zimbabwean health minister David Parirenyatwa was arrested and appeared in court Thursday facing charges of criminal abuse of office.
He was granted 500 U.S. dollars bail.
The state’s case is that in June this year, when Parirenyatwa was still a minister, he abused his position as a public officer when he directed the transfer of the boss of state-run National Pharmaceutical Company, Natpharm, to the ministry and for the boss to be replaced by his crony from the ministry.
The state alleges that this move resulted in Natpharm being prejudiced of funds through double payment of salaries for the same position.
Parirenyatwa is among ministers in former president Robert Mugabe’s government that were dropped from President Mnangagwa’s current cabinet that was announced last week.
He joins several other former ministers in Mugabe’s government that have been arrested for corruption since Mnangagwa assumed office in November last year.
In July, former energy minister Samuel Undenge was jailed for an effective two and half years for corruption, becoming the first minister to be jailed by Mnangagwa’s government.
Mnangagwa has promised to crack down on corruption as part of efforts to turn around the fortunes of the under-performing economy.
