WINDHOEK, 18 JUL – Joseph Kalimbwe, a former president of the University of Namibia (UNAM) Student Representative Council (SRC) facing charges of fraud and forgery, on Wednesday lost his legal representation.
Court documents availed to Nampa show that the 26-year-old Kalimbwe was scheduled to enter preliminary pleas to the charges in terms of Section 119 of the Criminal Procedures Act of 1977 on Tuesday, but could not do so due to the withdrawal of his privately-instructed defence lawyer Stanley Kavetu from the case, owing to Kalimbwe’s inability to pay legal representation fees.
Windhoek Magistrate Vanessa Stanley subsequently postponed the matter to 03 August 2018 to allow Kalimbwe to apply to the Justice Ministry’s Directorate of Legal Aid for a State-funded defence lawyer to represent him during future court proceedings and when the trial begins.
Kalimbwe is free on bail of N.dollars 1 000, which was extended until his next court appearance.
The bail is coupled with some conditions, which include Kalimbwe surrendering his passport to the police investigating officer and that he should not apply for new travel documents until his case is finalised.
He is also expected to report every Friday between 08h00 and 12h00 to the Windhoek Police Station.
Kalimbwe was arrested on 31 May 2017, while allegedly attending a student gathering at the UNAM Main Campus in the capital.
He faces three charges of forgery, fraud and altering.
Kalimbwe’s title as the SRC president was revoked in May 2017.
