RUNDU, 18 MAY – Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people inside and outside the European Union (EU) continue to be targets of violence and hate crime, the EU has said.
In a statement availed to Nampa by the EU on Thursday as way of celebrating the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), the EU said it is gravely concerned that sexual orientation and gender identity continue to be used to justify serious human rights violations around the world.
The day is observed on 17 May every year with the aim of raising awareness on the violation of LGBTI rights and stipulate interest in LGBTI rights worldwide. The date 17 May was specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
In the statement, the EU added that it will remain committed to promote the human rights of LGBTI persons and protect the enjoyment of all human rights by LGBTI as a way of celebrating the day.
It further indicated that the EU’s aims to promote and protect all human rights of LGBTI person’s remain on the basis of existing international legal standards in the area, mainly those set by the United Nations.
