LUSAKA, FEB 7 — Former Zambian President Rupiah Banda on Thursday called for an end to lies in the international media about the country’s economy.
Banda, who ruled Zambia from Aug. 2008 to Sept. 2011, said it was regrettable that a lot of lies have been told about the country’s economy being bleak.
The former Zambian leader cited continued lies being peddled that the country risk losing some of its state-owned enterprises and national assets to debtors such as China.
The lies about the country’s economy should be brought to and as they were capable of destroying the image abroad, according to a release from his office, said Banda.
Banda was speaking in South Africa enroute to Nigeria where he is leading a delegation to monitor that country’s general election scheduled for Feb. 16.
Incumbent President Edgar Lungu has a group of professionals who would help him develop the country, said Banda, adding that the country was capable of paying back its debt as it was within its limits.
