WINDHOEK, 22 JUN – The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources has called on fish right holders, small scale traders, retailers and other stakeholders in the fishing industry to join hands in achieving the world fish consumption level.
The world fish consumption level is 21.4 kilogrammes (kg) per person per year and Namibia is currently at 11 kg per person per year, way below the world average.
Bernhard Esau made the call in a speech read on his behalf here by Deputy Minister, Sylvia Makgone during the inauguration of the Wanaheda Fish Shop on Friday.
The fish shop is an initiative of the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) and is one of its 15 shops within regions in Namibia.
“The country is faced with a challenge of ensuring that Namibians consume fish per capita than is currently the case, in keeping with the status as a major fishing nation in the world,” he explained.
He thus urged all Namibians to adopt a culture of eating fish.
This objective to increase local fish consumption will not be realised by distributing fish only through NFCPT.
Esau made it clear that policies such as the Harambee Prosperity Plan, Vision 2030 and the national development plans ensure that right holders provide 30 per cent of the country’s horse mackerel to be sold locally.
This is to ensure that people have access to fish and hence meet the world target.
“I am committed to raise our current fish consumption level to the world average of 21.4 kg per person per year during this financial year,” he promised.
The fish shop consist of three offices, a canteen, retail area, fish processing area, cold storage and a chemical room.
It was constructed at a cost of over N.dollars 4 million.
