Education ministry inaugurates new learning village in Karasburg

KARASBURG, 05 APR – The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MoEAC) inaugurated a learning village in Karasburg on Wednesday.
The learning village is aimed “at opening doors of opportunities and to raise the levels of livelihoods through education” for children in the communities of Karasburg and its surrounding areas.
It consists of a library, a computer laboratory with internet connection, Teachers’ Resource Centre, conference room, a district education office for adult learners, and restrooms.
Inaugurating the learning village, Deputy Minister Anna Nghipondoka explained that according to the Namibia Household Income and Expenditure Survey (NHIES) of 2015/2016 report, 99,1 per cent of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 in the //Kharas Region are literate with only 0,9 per cent of youth between those ages not literate.
“We cannot be content with these numbers. We cannot leave any child in the vacuum of illiteracy, simply put, no child should feel left out,” she said.
The deputy minister encouraged the local community to make use of the learning village so as to enable them to contribute to the economic, social and all other developmental areas of their community.
“It is my sincere hope that this learning village will become a hub of learning activities where acquisition of knowledge and skills development for lifelong learning will take place and all other relevant activities to develop your communities.”
Nghipondoka reminded the community that when Government invests in such facilities, “it is investing in the people of the community, their dreams and aspiration, hopes and ambitions for themselves and for their children”.
She stressed that it is now up to the people of Karasburg to use and maintain the facility.
Nghipondoka also called on the communities in and around this town to “guard jealously against anything or anyone that might threaten to damage or vandalise” it.
The renovated facility that houses the learning village, was first a public library built in 1983, of which a part was also used by NamPost for services over the years.
