WINDHOEK, 22 SEP – The Namibian agricultural sector has declined in performance compared to strong growth shown in the corresponding quarter of 2017.
This was revealed in the Second Quarter Gross Domestic Product 2018 report of the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) released on Thursday.
NSA Statistician-General, Alex Shimwafeni explained that this is due to fewer animals made available for slaughter despite good rainfall and promising livestock prices.
The sector recorded a decline of 1,1 per cent in the second quarter of 2018, while robust performance of 20,9 per cent was recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2017.
The livestock subsector has registered a decline of 6,9 per cent compared to growth of 20,5 per cent registered in the corresponding quarter of last year.
“The contraction in the subsector is driven by the rainy season that saw farmers deciding to restock rather than market their livestock,” the report reads.
Cattle export to abattoirs and butchers registered a decline of 10,4 per cent compared to an increase of 3,9 per cent in the same quarter of 2017.
Small stock marketed to abattoirs and butchers reportedly registered an improved performance by posting a decline of 14,6 per cent compared to a decline of 20,9 per cent recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2017.
Cattle exported live to South Africa and Angola contracted, recording a decline of 22,6 per cent, while small stock exported live to South Africa and Angola surged, posting growth of 7,7 per cent during the period under review.
The crop farming subsector slowed to a 10,7 per cent growth rate in real value added compared to stronger growth of 27,9 per cent recorded in the same quarter of 2017.
“The slow performance is primarily attributed to the army worm and other pests that threatened the subsector despite the substantial late rainfalls,” Shimwafeni explained.
Executive for the NSA’s Geographic Information Systems and National Statistical Data Information, Alex Mudabedi explained that the recent statistics show that there are more cattle north of the Veterinary Cordon Fence than south of the fence.
“There are over 1.8 million cattle in northern Namibia and between 800 000 and 900 000 south of the fence,” he said.
This, according to Mudabedi, can be attributed to an absence of proper marketing opportunities in the northern part of the country, while farmers on the other side of the fence are exposed to more commercial alternatives.
The statistics further show that there are more sheep south of the fence, with more sheep in the commercial areas. – NAMPA
