Celebrities to box against GBV

WINDHOEK, JUNE 20 – The fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)  has gone ringside as MTC launched ‘The MTC Knockout Project.’

The agenda speaks  against GBVs malicious trend that has plagued Namibia’s society.

Celebrities and business personalities will undergo a three-month boot camp training under the tutelage of legendary African boxing promoter Nestor Tobias’ MTC Nestor Sunshine and the surging MTC Salute Boxing Promotions prior to the event.

MTC’s chief Tim Ekandjo said, “The project brings together different celebrated Namibian personalities to fight exhibition style boxing over three rounds and showcase their stance against various social ills including gender based violence which has ridden our society for such a long time.”

The event is scheduled for 12 October 2019 at the Windhoek Country Club and Resort with a total of eight fights lined up for the evening, and personalities who have never entered a boxing ring.

“There have been eight confirmed bouts that will feature among them one of Namibia’s most celebrated rappers and Namibian award winning artist KP Illest, up against TV & Radio Personality, R&B Singer, Songwriter and MC Paul Da Prince for the Jr Middleweight Title.”

Honourable Margaret Mensah-Williams, Chairperson of Namibia’s National Council, reiterated that the most common form of GBV in Namibia was rape, forced marriages, domestic violence and sexual harassment.

“Gender based violence remains one of the biggest social challenges in Namibia. Although most victims are women, GBV affectseveryone including men,” said Mensah-Williams.

GBV manifests its self in different forms.

“GBV is at our doorstep, in your neighbors’ house, in schools, on streets, at work and on the internet. No matter where GBV happens, what form it takes, and whom it impacts, it must stop right now!”

Mensah-Williams called on the involvement of stakeholders from government, civil society, private sector, religious and spiritual leaders to amplify and join the course.
