KEETMANSHOOP, 23 MAY – The inaugural Nama Cultural Festival is set to take place from Thursday to Sunday at the Westdene Stadium in Keetmanshoop.
Spokesperson of the festival committee, Antonio Stuurmann told Nampa on Tuesday that all is set and everything is in place for the festival.
“The committee is ready to host this historical event, we have people travelling from South Africa and Botswana and we expect them to arrive on Thursday,” he said.
Stuurmann reiterated that the purpose of the festival is to unite the Nama people, stressing that this is the only agenda of the event.
“It has no political agenda as some see it. We want everyone from all over Namibia, from all walks of life, from different ethnic groups and different backgrounds to come and witness this event,” he said.
The Nama Cultural Festival was launched earlier in March by Governor of the //Kharas Region, Lucia Basson and the committee plans to make it an annual event.
According to the programme availed to Nampa, the festival will open officially on Friday with various chiefs from Botswana, South Africa and local clans expected to deliver speeches.
Later the same day, there will be a film screening, panel discussion and soccer matches.
Saturday will see an exhibition of karakul pelts, while throughout, dance and stalls with traditional food, medicine and artefacts will be on display.
