BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 11 — A first-half goal from Marcos Acuna gave River Plate a 1-0 home win over Estudiantes Rio Cuarto in Argentina’s Clausura tournament on Saturday.
The hosts took the lead in the sixth minute when Acuna met Angel Correa’s cross with a sliding finish at the far post.
The visitors controlled less than 30% of possession and failed to have a single shot on target as they stumbled to their eighth loss of the campaign.
River Plate is now ninth in the 15-team Zone B standings with 16 points, 10 ahead of last-placed Estudiantes Rio Cuarto.
Elsewhere, Norberto Briasco scored in each half as Barracas Central cruised to a 2-0 home win over Huracan.
The hosts went ahead in the ninth minute when Briasco latched onto Kevin Jappert’s cross with a first-time effort into the far corner.
Briasco doubled the advantage just after the hour, pouncing on an errant clearance with a long-range volley that rebounded in off the underside of the bar.
The visitors had only one shot on target as they slipped to their third defeat of the campaign. Barracas Central is now eighth in Zone B, a point behind fifth-placed Huracan.
In other Argentine top-flight matches on Saturday, Banfield won 2-1 at Tigre and Central Cordoba drew 2-2 at home to Estudiantes. (Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
