KATHMANDU, Oct. 11 — At least 40 houses and two suspension bridges were swept away by a flash flood in the Kaligandaki River in Nepal’s Gorkha district on Sunday morning, a local official said.
A landslide blocked the river in Chumanubri Rural Municipality, causing a flash flood when the blockage broke.
“At least 40 houses in five different settlements have been swept away in the flood,” Laxmi Gurung, vice-chairperson of the rural municipality, told Xinhua.
No casualties have been reported so far. Residents living along the river corridor were asked to evacuate their homes early Sunday morning following warnings of a possible flood.
Authorities are still gathering details of the damage, Gurung said. Rescue teams, including personnel dispatched from Kathmandu, have reached the disaster site, while further assessments of the disaster are ongoing.
