WINDHOEK, May 24 — Namibia’s president Hage Geingob, on Friday conferred the late former Vice President Nickey Iyambo with hero status and a state funeral will be held in his honor on June 1.
Iyambo who resigned as Vice President in 2018 due to ill health, died in Windhoek on May 19.
According to a statement from the presidency on Friday, following consultations with the wife and family, Hage Geingob directed that Iyambo’s remains be interred at the National Heroes Acre in Windhoek on Saturday, June 1.
“President Geingob has directed that a period of national mourning be observed in honor of the late Iyambo during which flags will be flown at half-mast with effect from Wednesday, May 29 to June 1”, the Presidency added.
Meanwhile, Geingob described Iyambo as a father, comrade, friend, and mentor who leaves behind a rich legacy of service to the Namibian people. – XINHUA
