OTAVI, 26 MAY – Ohorongo Cement has pledged to buy non-recyclable waste materials collected on Friday during the national clean-up campaign for use in its manufacturing process.
These materials include plastic bags, potato chip packets, sweet wrappers and straws, which would have ended up on dumpsites.
Ohorongo Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager, Esther Mbathera in an interview with Nampa on Friday said Ohorongo will buy the materials from Rent-A-Drum, which has arranged to collect the waste from various points in the regions.
Mbathera said more than 80 jobs have been created by Rent-A-Drum to assist with sorting, packing, loading and transporting the waste from the collection centres to the Ohorongo Cement factory about 30 kilometres north of Otavi in the Otjozondjupa Region.
She said some local authorities are struggling to properly dispose of the waste materials.
“If they can ensure that their waste is taken to Rent-A-Drum’s collection points at Oshakati, Ongwediva, Swakopmund and Windhoek for sorting and processing, then Ohorongo will ensure that the waste is disposed of permanently at its factory in a safe and sustainable manner,” Mbathera said.
She said the selected non-recyclable materials are a good source of energy for their kiln (furnace).
Similar waste has been used in the kiln alongside other alternative fuels since 2017.
The company also uses wood and charcoal that it buys from local farmers.
The kiln section is key in the cement manufacturing process and has a gas temperature of up to 2 000 degrees Celsius, which guarantees complete combustion of organic substances.
“This is done in a sustainable manner which ensures that no harmful emission is released,” Mbathera said.
Nampa on Thursday visited the alternative fuel storage warehouses at the Ohorongo Cement plant, where wood chips, coal and charcoal are stored for use in the kiln.
Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba officially opened the cement factory in February 2011.
