KARIBIB, 20 AUG – Karibib Town Council Chief Executive Officer Lesley Goreseb has quashed allegations of mismanagement and misappropriation of State money mounted against him and by extension, the municipality.
Goreseb made these revelations in an interview with Nampa recently in response to accusations by some members of the community that the council could not account for N$20 million or bring development to Karibib.
He provided this agency with a detailed report on how the town council spent the N$20 million subsidy it received from the urban and rural development ministry for the 2015/16 financial year.
The money, according to the documents, was earmarked for the development of a new extension – Extension 2 Usab – and the town council overspent its budget by N$52 969.33. The funds were used for sewer service installation at the new extension.
In the process, 12 permanent jobs for skilled labourers, 80 temporary jobs for unskilled workers, and one job for a person with disabilities were created.
During the same period, the council also spent N$4 million on the construction of a state of the art emergency response unit.
Goreseb maintained that he has nothing to hide, claiming that the funds were spent as was planned and overspent in some instances.
However, details of a personal scrimmage between Goreseb and former councillor Christiaan Nguherimo have surfaced, following allegations that Nguherimo instigated the community to demonstrate against the municipality.
The struggle between the two, according to documents at Nampa’s disposal, stems from a business deal Nguherimo was involved in.
It is what Goreseb described as a business deal gone wrong that has seen the former councillor “go on a crusade to pit the town’s community against the council over alleged corruption and lack of development”.
Goreseb told this agency that development in the town was evident and that “the allegations by the former councillor are more personal than evidence-based”.
Approached for comment, Nguherimo denied instigating the community.
“I don’t know why Goreseb continues defaming my name. I am not instigating the public against the council or anybody. Those are serious allegations against my person.”
Nguherimo said there is no tangible development in Karibib and maintained that N.dollars 20 million was swindled from council coffers.
“Let them deal with the community issues! What did they do with the N$20 million? Why is Extension 2 not complete? These are not things I am sucking out of my thumb. The Anti-Corruption Commission must come and investigate these things,” he stressed.
Contacted for comment on Friday, Anti-Corruption Commission Director-General Paulus Noa said no corruption case has been opened with them and he urged those in the know to come forth with information.
