Kai//Ganaxab to become fully-fledged VTC

WINDHOEK, 17 APR – The Kai//Ganaxab Youth Skills Training Centre in the Hardap Region, which falls under the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service will next year become a formal vocational training centre (VTC).
This forms part of a partnership agreement signed by that ministry and the Ministry of Higher Education, Training and Innovation, here on Tuesday.
Speaking at the signing, the higher education minister, Itah Kandjii-Murangi explained that once it is transformed into a fully-fledged VTC, Kai//Ganaxab will offer foundation courses (skills upgrading programmes) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training level programmes.
She said her ministry will continue to cooperate with the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service to ensure that the youth are given the right skills and are put on a path towards self-employment and ensuring that they contribute to Namibia’s economic development.
On his part, the youth minister, Erastus Uutoni said development at Kai//Ganaxab is going slowly and the centre lacks highly qualified instructors.
He added that his ministry will also look at other areas of cooperation with other ministries, such as that of trade and Small and Medium Enterprise development, which will enable young people to get involved in agriculture through credit guarantee schemes.
“If we have all these resources together and we put them together, we can allow them to work on a farm,” Uutoni said.
Through the partnership, the two ministries will ensure that unemployment and skills development in Namibia are addressed, he added.
Apart from the Kai//Ganaxab centre, the ministry has three other main youth skills training centres in the country; Berg Aukas in the Otjozondjupa Region, Frans Dimbare in Kavango East and Okahao Youth Skills Training Centre in Omusati.
The centres were established to impart skills to out-of-school and unemployed young people who do not meet the basic entry requirements of the mainstream VTCs.
