WINDHOEK, 01 OCT – President Hage Geingob on Monday chastised the employees of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) for holding their director general, Stanley Similo, hostage.
The purported action came after the broadcaster started airing the opening of the second National Land Conference on Monday, following a bailout of N.dollars 20 million by Government to meet employee salary increase demands.
Geingob lashed out at the national broadcaster’s staff during the official opening of the conference, saying the staff members “had issues or an agenda all along”.
“If police action is taken, then you know that the man (Similo) is being held hostage, because they were sabotaging it (the national conference) all along,” he said.
The NBC was meant to broadcast the land conference live, but its employees downed tools last Friday, demanding a salary increase of six per cent, which they were supposed to get last April.
After a late meeting between Government officials and NBC management on Sunday, the government agreed to bail out the broadcaster with N.dollars 20 million.
About 800 delegates from all over the country are attending the conference, which ends on Friday.
