WALVIS BAY, January 1, 2025 — Galp, alongside its partners NAMCOR and Custos, has made another promising discovery of light oil and gas condensate at the PEL83 license offshore Namibia.
The Mopane-2A well (the fourth well in the PEL83 campaign) was spudded on December 2, 2024, using Saipem’s Santorini drillship. The partners successfully drilled and logged the well, uncovering a hydrocarbon column of gas condensate in the AVO-3 reservoir with a thin net pay zone in the reservoir’s sweet spot.
Additionally, Mopane-2A identified a hydrocarbon column of light oil in a smaller reservoir, AVO-4. Both reservoirs revealed high-quality sands characterized by excellent porosities and permeabilities, high pressures, and low fluid viscosities. Importantly, the findings indicated minimal CO2 levels and an absence of H2S concentrations.
Consistent with the results of earlier wells in the Mopane series, no water contacts were detected in Mopane-2A, further emphasizing the reservoir’s potential.
Galp and its partners plan to thoroughly analyze and integrate the newly acquired data to gain a deeper understanding of the Mopane complex. Concurrently, Galp is assessing the commercial viability of these discoveries.
The exploration and appraisal (E&A) campaign in the Mopane area continues with the Santorini drillship now en route to the Mopane-3X exploration well (the fifth well in the program). Mopane-3X will target two stacked prospects, AVO-10 and AVO-13, with drilling expected to begin around January 1, 2025.
In tandem with drilling operations, the joint venture is conducting a high-density, high-resolution 3D seismic survey to further delineate the Mopane complex’s development potential.
Galp operates the block with an 80% interest, while NAMCOR and Custos each hold a 10% working interest.
