MARIENTAL, Aug. 4 — The Mariental municipality council is installing CCTV in the town to enhance security.
The town council raised more than N$200 000 from local businesses to fund the project.
“Residents will notice some activity happening in and around the town over the next few months as the council will commence the installation of close circuit television (CCTV) network,” the town’s chief executive officer Paul Nghiwilepo said.
So far the council has already spent more than N$220 000 from the funded money and the cost can still increase.
The CCTVs will be installed in public open areas, walkways, and entrance and exit points said Nghiwilepo.
The main aim is for detection and deterrence of crime and to pick up any fire in buildings.
“The project funded by local businesses will see the installation of 4×4 way cameras in different locations in and around its area of jurisdiction. The council envisage that the CCTV installation will be completed by 30 October 2022,” Nghiwilepo said.
He said the council will work closely with the Namibian Police and the Neighborhood Watch so that they don’t infringe on the residents’ privacy and also get the public opinions.
“If there is a crime committed, footage and evidence will only be released with the permission of the magistrate and will only be released to the police or the Namibian Intelligence Services because data protection is very important to us,” the chief of fire and emergency services Dirk Cloete added.
