OTJIWARONGO, 26 NOV – Four men arrested on Saturday morning with two unlicensed AK47 assault rifles and 67 rounds of ammunition appeared in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on a charge of contravening the Arms and Ammunitions Act of 1996.
The four men – Andreas Mungenga, 26, Shikature Haingura, 35, Lukas Mbangu, 26, and 37-year-old Likoro Moses Mwila – who hail from the Kavango East Region appeared before the Otjiwarongo Magistrate Eduard Kesslau on Monday.
Kesslau informed them of their legal right to engage a lawyer of their choice; apply for a State funded lawyer through the Ministry of Justice’s Legal Aid Directorate; or defend themselves in court.
The quartet opted to apply for State-funded lawyers through the Legal Aid Directorate in the Ministry of Justice.
Public prosecutor Coleen Yisa strongly objected to the granting of bail, suggesting that the two AK47 be sent for the ballistic testing in the capital as the men might have already hunted protected game at an unknown place in the Otjozondjupa Region.
The four men were then remanded in custody and their case postponed to 28 February 2019 for further police investigations and to also to allow them time to acquire lawyers.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha on Monday told Nampa that the men were intercepted and arrested at the Otjiwarongo permanent police roadblock after a tip-off from the members of the general public.
“We arrested them after we stopped and searched a sedan vehicle they were travelling in, where we found the two guns and ammunition,” said Mbeha.
She added that the two AK47 weapons and the ammunition including other live ammunition of a sniper automatic machine-gun, were all found hidden in the vehicle.
The men were travelling from the direction of Otavi towards Otjiwarongo at the time of their arrest, Mbeha noted. – NAMPA
