ISTANBUL, JAN 17 — Turkey on Thursday deported a Dutch journalist with suspected links to a terror group over tip from the Dutch side, said head of the directorate of communications under the Turkish presidency.
Johanna Cornelia Boersma, a freelance reporter with the Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad, was expelled in the morning after the Turkish intelligence received from the Dutch police “her links to a designated terrorist organization,” Fahrettin Altun said in a written statement.
The Dutch police also requested more information about her movements in and out of Turkey, Altun said, stating the reporter’s deportation was in no way related to her reporting activities in Turkey.
Altun later tweeted that the Netherlands told Turkey the reporter had links to Jabhat al Nusra, also known as Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, a force involved in the Syrian war which has been listed as a terror group by a number of countries including Turkey.
“If a credible foreign government agency tells you that one of their citizens has links to terrorism, you don’t take any chances,” Altun wrote.
Earlier this month, the directorate of communications issued a press card to Boersma, which is valid until the end of January.
Due to the seriousness of terror threats, Turkey is working closely with its friends and allies, including the Netherlands, to identify and neutralize threats against the security of Turkey and Europe, Altun said in his statement.
“Until now, the Turkish authorities, with the help of their international partners, have blacklisted tens of thousands of individuals with links to terror groups,” he added. – XINHUA
