LUSAKA, Jan. 26-- An organization working in hygiene, sanitation and humanitarian sectors on Tuesday urged lawmakers in Zambia to come up with a policy that will ensure the provision of free sanitary pads in schools. Jacqueline Chishimba, iSanitize Executive Director, said lawmakers should sign a contract with the organization to ensure that they will formulate a policy to provide free sanitary pads after the August 2021 general elections and end menstrual poverty among female school learners in Zambian schools. She said there was need for concerted efforts by all stakeholders, especially politicians, to find a lasting solution to menstrual poverty which has affected more than 35 percent of female school learners, adding that the situation has become worse with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. "iSanitize is lobbying for the distribution of free sanitary pads, from the next government following the August 2021 elections. The incoming government should work towards the provision of free sanitary pads in all schools from September 2021," she said. According to her, it was disheartening that colossal sums of money were being embezzled as revealed by the Auditor-General's Report while female school learners suffer menstrual poverty with little attention and resources accorded to their plight. She added that many female menstruating learners prefer staying at home instead of going to school due to lack of menstrual hygiene management facility tools in schools. The government, she said, should ensure free provision of sanitary pads the same way condoms were distributed because they hinge on the girl child's welfare. According to her, many girls in both urban and rural Zambia unintentionally miss school for about 21 days every term during their menstrual period. This means that if this issue is not addressed, it will make the attainment of gender equality and girls' education far-fetched, she added. Xinhua
