Volleyball refereeing course starts in Windhoek

WINDHOEK, 22 APR – A three-day course for referees by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) started at the Israel Patrick Iyambo Police Training College in Windhoek on Saturday.
Forty-two referees from various regions with Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) licences are participating in the course in order to qualify for FIVB licensing.
FIVB instructor Waleed Abdelsamad from Egypt is conducting the training.
Speaking at the opening of the training, Namibian Volleyball Federation President, Hillary Imbuwa said improvement in refereeing will upgrade the standard of local games.
“Namibia does not have internationally accredited volleyball referees so this course will help us and the local games will improve as well,” said Imbuwa.
Also addressing the event was Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, Emma Kantema-Gaomas, who urged the participants to get a good understanding of the rules as this will enable them to make better decisions.
“I am confident that this course will add value to what you do,” Kantema-Gaomas said.
She further said the essence of a good official lies in the concept of fairness and consistency.
“You must use this platform to interact, exchange ideas, share experiences and learn from each other,” the permanent secretary said.
She also reminded participants that the government has recognised the potential of sport to contribute to development, hence its inclusion in the fifth National Development Plan.
“The way we develop sports and conduct ourselves will encourage Government to improve the funding of sports,” she said.
