NKURENKURU, 16 AUG – The Vakwangali Annual Cultural Festival (VACF) which was lastly celebrated in the 1960s is to be revived between 07 and 09 September.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday about the event, Chairperson of the historian committee which forms part of the organising body, Petrus Sindimba, said the festival is planned to be held at Mayara village, the village of the royal family located east of Nkurenkuru.
Sindimba, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nkurenkuru Town Council, said the Ukwanglai Annual Cultural Festival will be held this year in order to restore the cultural heritage and dignity of the Vakwangali people.
“This year, the hompa [chief] of the Vakwangali Traditional Authority, Eugene Siwombe Kudumo decided that the cultural festival should be revived in order to show case the tradition of the Vakwangali people and also as a way of preserving their culture,” said Sindimba.
He indicated that preparations towards the festival are at an advanced stage and various committees have been established to finalise preparations for the event.
Some of the activities expected at the festival, Sindimba said, will be tales of the Vakwangali people which will be narrated by elders and selected historians, traditional dances as well as the preparation and exhibition of traditional cuisines.
He further added that the Vakwangali traditional dressing codes such as sikato, ewindo and nakandunga will also be showcased at the festival.
“I advise people to come and witness the culture of the Vakwangali people”, opined Sindimba.
In addition, Chairperson of the Chief Council, Hisikia Kafene Siteketa, told Nampa that the festival was last held in 1966 under Queen Kanuni.
