WINDHOEK, 30 JUN – The United States of America Ambassador to Namibia, Lisa Johnson is expected to pay a site visit to the Samora Machel Constituency in Windhoek on Friday to assess the current situation of the Hepatitis E Virus (HEV).
This was announced in the media statement issued on Friday by Media Assistant at the US Embassy in Namibia, Jacques du Toit.
According to the statement, the purpose of the visit will be to see the progress made and the challenges remaining in addressing the HEV outbreak.
The HEV outbreak in Windhoek was declared in December last year following nine laboratory-tested positive cases of HEV and according to the statement, as of June 2018, 1,569 epidemiological-linked cases of HEV were recorded, including 15 deaths, six of which were of pregnant women.
The diplomat’s visit will start with an update on HEV at the Samora Machel Constituency office in Wanahenda, followed by a tour of the area, during which a demonstration of water testing will be conducted.
The Samora Machel Constituency was the area where Namibia’s Head of State, Hage Geingob made the call on all citizens to keep their surroundings clean to help minimise the risk of contracting diseases when launching the national clean-up campaign held in May this year.
