WINDHOEK, 13 MAY – The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) is consumed by infighting among members due to divisions on political lines, the chairperson of Labour Investment Holdings (LIH) has said.
Sacky Aipinge made the remark during the union’s central regional biennial conference here on Saturday.
LIH is the investment arm of the National Union of Namibian Workers under which the MUN falls.
Aipinge said trade union unity is key to success, however infighting would destroy it and make it look weak to employers.
He noted that labour unions have to confront issues on the basis of realities, applying what is happening in the economy.
Aipinge, the former MUN assistant secretary-general, said unions should have a realistic formulation of demands when representing workers and thus should understand issues related to inflation and commodity prices.
He further called on labour union members to desist from pursuing their own interests and to rather focus on pursuing the interests of workers for better living wages.
Meanwhile, MUN President Desley Somseb also condemned the pursuit of personal interests in the structures of the union and called for accountability from its members.
