REHOBOTH, 23 SEP – The University of Namibia School of Veterinary Medicine staff and students will undertake a visit to the ||Kharas Region from 25 to 27 September to investigate the roles donkeys play and their importance in Namibian communities.
The school, under the umbrella of the Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Resources, aims to train veterinary professionals who are adequately equipped with skills to assist both the public and private sectors in all relevant veterinary fields. These include disease surveillance, diagnostics, prevention, control and veterinary public health, especially in the remote areas of the country.
Speaking to Nampa on Sunday, group leader and lecturer of Biomedical Sciences, Dr Bernard Chiwome said the plan of the visit is to assess people’s knowledge of and attitude towards the health and welfare of working equids (donkeys) and to conduct more research on equids as there is not enough research done on them.
“We will conduct community training on animal handling and management of donkeys and and how to treat the animals in need of critical medical assistance. We will meet with donkey owners and discuss with them the matters concerning donkey welfare and what they are used for in the community,” Chiwome said.
He said a second visit will also be conducted and will address what was found during the first visit.
“We will count and physically examine as many donkeys as possible, to identify if there are any major medical conditions and address it on that specific day or prepare for when we have a follow up visit early next year,” he noted.
Chiwome urged the community members to have their donkeys onsite during the days of the visit.
The outreach programme will kick off on 25 September in Bethanië and !Khosis between 07h30 and 18h00, followed by Berseba, !Gai-||naxas and Soutputz on 26 September between 07h30 and 18h00.
The programme will conclude the following day in Tses and Vaalgras, also between 07h30 and 18h00.
