SWAKOPMUND, 20 SEP – Members of the Trade Union Congress of Namibia (TUCNA) have expressed disappointment over the omission of the umbrella body and other movements from the upcoming National Land Conference.
In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Teachers Union of Namibia secretary-general, Mahongora Kavihuha, on behalf of the umbrella body TUCNA, said that this exclusion will compromise the Constitution unions and others are representing.
“We are seeing this invitation to the national conference as a Cabinet retreat or an extension of the Swapo Party Congress, because the institutions which are invited are the ones that are close allies of the government,” Kavihuha expressed.
He questioned why TUCNA and the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement among others, were not invited to this important event.
“TUCNA has been proven beyond reasonable doubt as [a] relevant stakeholder in the social development of Namibia, but has been omitted.”
He added that as a union, TUCNA is an equal partner in the socio-economic development in Namibia and is greatly disappointed with the composition of the invitees to the much-anticipated second land conference.
“This is a problem. It is not justice and will not be sustainable because non-governmental stakeholders have not been given a platform to address the land issue. How can you invite foreign institutions from foreign countries and leave out your own people?”
Kavihuha said they “foresee that the resolutions of the conference were already set even before it starts”.
The second National Land Conference will run from 01-05 October 2018 and will be hosted by the Office of the Prime Minister, in conjunction with the Ministry of Land Reform and other relevant government institutions.
Those invited to the conference include traditional authorities, municipalities and ministries, among other institutions. – NAMPA
