Tjongarero lauds succesful Skorpion Zinc Cup

WINDHOEK, AUG. 28 – The Namibia Football Association (NFA) has lauded the recently concluded Skorpion Zinc under-17 tournament as a success.
In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, NFA Technical Director, Timo Tjongarero explained that the tournament, which was held in Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region this weekend, was of a high standard.
“The standard of football was a bit higher compared to the previous tournament. This, I believe was aided by the quality of the pitch at Omulunga Stadium,” he said.
He added that there was talent from all over the country as different regional teams displayed different aspects of football.
“The goalkeeper from Zambezi has the right physique, which if managed well and given special technical attention, he can be a great player. One boy from Otjozondjupa has an eye for goal, something that we lack in Namibia right now,” he noted.
He stressed that there were players from the //Kharas team, whose physique let them down, but with proper gym work, could be transformed into great players who are technically gifted.
Tjongarero further continued that the player of the tournament, Dandre Botha from //Kharas, displayed great quality and with proper coaching and life skills management, he can become one of the country’s great players for the future.
The 2016 Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) winning coach said he and other coaches noted that some teams were really prepared for the tournament as they displayed great coordination and teamwork.
“As usual, we are using this tournament to select players who will represent the country at the 2019 Cosafa under 19 tournament, and we did manage to identify players that we can also use in the 2020 tournament as well,” he said.
This will give the technical team enough time to work with the team as preparation for the 2020 tournament, which will also serve as the Confederation of African Football under-17 Nations Cup Qualifier.
