DAR ES SALAAM, January 1, 2025 — Anti-narcotics authorities in Tanzania’s Zanzibar said on Monday that they had seized a record 798.89 kg of drugs in three months on the Indian Ocean islands.
Buruhani Zuberi Nassoro, commissioner general of the Zanzibar Drugs Control and Enforcement Authority (ZDCEA), said the seized drugs included heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and cannabis.
“This was the biggest ever seizure of drugs in Zanzibar,” Nassoro told a news conference, adding that the drugs were seized in a joint crackdown by the ZDCEA, police, and other security organs conducted between Oct. 1 and Dec. 29.
He said the drugs were packaged in containers labeled chocolate, organic coffee, cocoa, and green tea to avoid detection by the authorities.
Nassoro said scores of suspects were also arrested in connection with the massive drug haul, adding that they will appear in court after preliminary investigations are completed. (Xinhua)
