DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 8 — The Tanzanian police have launched a nationwide manhunt for individuals accused of organizing and participating in violent unrest that erupted in multiple regions following the Oct. 29 general elections.
In a statement released late Friday, the police said the riots, looting, and acts of arson occurred in the cities of Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, and Mbeya, as well as in the regions of Shinyanga, Geita, Songwe, Ruvuma, Mara, Dodoma, Kilimanjaro, and Iringa, causing significant damage to public and private property.
The statement said public facilities, including offices of the Tanzania Revenue Authority and the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau, court buildings, police stations, bus rapid transit stations, and local government offices, were vandalized or set ablaze.
Private businesses were not spared, with fuel stations, shops, and vehicles, both private and commercial, set on fire and looted, according to the statement.
The police said that while joint security operations are ongoing to apprehend those still at large, legal proceedings for those already detained began on Friday. (Xinhua)
