Suspect in woman’s death at Grootfontein arrested and appears in court

OTJIWARONGO, 08 JUN  – The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in Otjozondjupa on Wednesday arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the death of Ndaliko Victoria Amunyongi, who was attacked, robbed and killed Saturday night at her house.
The suspect, Hendrick Gariseb, allegedly fled the scene with her cellphone.
He was on Thursday remanded in police custody by Magistrate Stanley Tembwe on charges of murder and robbery when he made his first appearance in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court.
Spokesperson of NamPol in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha after the incident told Nampa that Amunyongi was stabbed in the neck once at the doorstep of her house and succumbed to the injury there.
Preliminary police investigations indicate she was coming from a church service at the Omulunga Community Hall at about 22h00 when she was attacked over her Samsung Galaxy J5.
The deceased’s cellphone was found in Gariseb’s possession at the time of his arrest on Wednesday at Grootfontein.
The knife suspected to have been used in the attack was also found and confiscated by the police from the suspect during the arrest.
Mbeha on Friday thanked the Grootfontein community for assisting the police in tracking the suspect down and urged them to continue working closely with law enforcement in the quest to keep the town free from criminal activities.
Gariseb, who has pending stock theft and house-breaking cases at Grootfontein, is expected to return to court on 31 July 2018 for the murder and robbery incident. He indicated that he would apply for a State-funded lawyer through the Ministry of Justice’s Legal Aid Directorate to represent him.
