Soroseb gets life imprisonment for killing girlfriend

WINDHOEK, 22 JUN  – A man who admitted to killing his 20-year-old girlfriend by hitting her with a brick and hammer before stabbing her eight times with a knife has been sent to jail for life on Thursday.
The incident happened on 20 June 2016 in the capital.
David Soroseb, 27, was sentenced to life imprisonment on the count of murder with direct intention to kill in connection with the deadly attacks that he launched on his late girlfriend Jeanet Tatamigu !Haoses on that fateful day.
In terms of Namibia’s Correctional Service Act of 2012, someone sentenced to life imprisonment after 15 August 1999 would only be eligible to be considered for release on parole or probation after serving at least 25 years in prison without committing or being convicted of any crime or offence during that period.
On the second count of assault on his girlfriend, he was sentenced to six months imprisonment which was ordered concurrently with the punishment imposed in respect of the first count of murder with direct intention to kill.
In the result, he was thus sentenced to life imprisonment.
“These were brutal attacks committed against an innocent and defenceless woman. The convict is a danger to society who needs to be removed from the public for a very long time,” said High Court Judge Dinah Usiku as she sent Soroseb behind bars for life.
In his submission before sentence, State Advocate Cliff Lutibezi also asked for a life imprisonment because Soroseb wanted to ensure that the deceased did not survive the attacks on her when he locked the room shortly after he stabbed her eight times with a knife.
His government-funded defence lawyer Titus Ipumbu unsuccessfully wanted the court to hand down a sentence that would not destroy his client’s chances of rehabilitation.
Evidence presented during trial had it that Soroseb shortly after he found out that !Haoses was dead attempted to commit suicide by drinking acid.
He will serve his life sentence at the Windhoek Central Correctional Facility.
