RUNDU, 05 JUL – Rundu Mayor, Verna Sinimbo has asked all residents of Rundu to offer their support to the bereaved family of the five people who were killed on Sunday in the Ndama location here.
Two women and three boys were assaulted and killed by a family member in the early hours of that morning. The suspect, Jesah Gabriel Tjunda, who appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, was subsequently denied bail due to the seriousness of the offence.
Visiting the family house of the deceased on Wednesday, Sinimbo said the town of Rundu was shocked by the gruesome murder and urged all residents to offer their support to the bereaved family at this difficult time and assist where possible with funeral arrangements.
Sinimbo said she is indeed saddened that innocent lives were taken so recklessly and that the community has been subjected to such violence, while offering her condolences to the family and friends of the victims.
She added that she hopes that the deaths of this family will force the community and the nation at large into a conversation about the safety and protection of women and children.
“Let this incident serve as a reminder that there is nothing normal about crime against women and children. We should never become indifferent nor passive, but rather work together in rooting out this evil from amongst us,” noted Sinimbo.
