MAPUTO, JAN 23 — Andre Hanekom, a South African businessman accused of financing armed attacks in the northern province Cabo Delgado of Mozambique, died earlier on Wednesday in the provincial hospital in the capital city Pemba of that province.
“My dad died early this morning in mysterious circumstances in the hospital in Pemba. His court case was going to be next week and he would have won, we have mountains of proof of his innocence,” Hanekom’s daughter Amanda Hanekom posted on her Facebook page.
Hanekom’s wife Francis has been campaigning for his release since he was arrested in August and she told the media that her husband was innocent but it’s too late to prove it, and the only thing that she is concerned about is to move her husband’s body back to South Africa.
“I hope that our lawyers and the South Africa’s Embassy in Mozambique will help us in whatever we need,” said Francis.
Hanekom, 62, owned a maritime logistics company in Cabo Delgado, who was arrested after some police officers in patrol tried to drive him off the road and then shot him in the arm and stomach. – XINHUA
