ONGWEDIVA, 09 AUG – Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Juliet Kavetuna said pregnancy and childbirth-related complications are the number one killers of girls aged 15 to 19 in developing countries, including Namibia.
Kavetuna said this whilst officiating at the World Population Day Commemoration at Ongwediva in the Oshana Region on Wednesday.
“In Namibia, contraceptive use among young people aged 15 to 19 is relatively low (24 per cent), yet teenage pregnancy remains high at 19 per cent (in 2013),” Kavetuna told her audience.
According to her, access to information and contraceptives can protect young people’s lives.
The more information the young people have, Kavetuna said, the better choices they can make to be able to fulfil their future.
She went on to say the Ministry of Health and Social Services is requesting parents to breach cultural norms of not discussing sexual reproductive issues with children and start to guide and advise the children on how to overcome the transitional period from childhood to adulthood.
Kavetuna wants parents to discuss family planning with their children, noting that if adults opt to keep quiet, figuratively-speaking, “stones will talk and the children will listen”.
“Internet and movies are misleading children,” the deputy minister explained.
She pointed out that family planning services are offered at all public health facilities.
Oshana Governor, Clemens Kashuupulwa in a speech delivered on his behalf noted that World Population Day is an annual event, observed on 11 July and it seeks to raise awareness of global population issues and reproductive health.
The Day was commemorated under the theme, ‘Family Planning is a Human Right’.
