Oshakati, 04 Nov – A sergeant with the Namibian Police Special Field Force was killed while six others sustained injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned near Keetmanshoop.
According to chief inspector Elifas Kuwinga the accident happened on Wednesday and the officer succumbed to his injuries on Friday, 4 November in Windhoek Central Hospital where he had been transferred.
Kuwinga said the accident happened at about 06h00 when seven Special Reserve force members were travelling from Keetmanshoop to Aroab where trial awaiting prisoners were reported to have become violent and the officers were send as reinforcements.
About 40km from Keetmanshoop on the Aroab gravel road, the driver lost control of the Police vehicle, a Toyota VVTi, which overturned and caught fire, beyond repair.
Police, an ambulance and fire brigade attended the scene and according to Kuwinga, case of culpable homicide was opened against the driver although investigations into the matter are continuing.
