Local Vendors in Tsumeb Rejoice as Fruit and Veg Hub Opens Its Doors

By Lylie Happiness

TSUMEB, August 05 – The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Hon. Erastus Uutoni, marked a significant milestone on August 4, 2023, as he inaugurated the Fruit and Veg Hub in Tsumeb. This new establishment aims to support local vendors who have been a consistent presence on Hage Geingob street for several years.

The Fruit and Veg Hub is the fruit of a partnership initiated back in 2019 between the Tsumeb Municipality and Dundee Precious Metals. This collaboration aimed to create a secure and affordable space for vendors, addressing concerns about their future livelihoods and curbing the rise of unlicensed business activities in the town.

With a capacity to accommodate around 105 vendors, the hub boasts an array of offerings including fruits and vegetable stalls, Kapana stalls, SME Units, Bulk stalls, an ablution facility, and ample parking.

During the inauguration, Minister Uutoni emphasized the role of both central and local government in formulating policies and programs that uplift citizens’ lives, especially at the grassroots level. He highlighted the importance of public spaces, exemplified by markets, in fostering a sense of community and contributing to economic growth.

“Markets bring together community members, local business leaders, and visitors, playing a crucial role in shaping our towns and driving economic development,” stated Uutoni. He underscored the significance of markets in job creation, income generation, and revenue mobilization, labeling them as essential engines powering local economic growth and physical development.

Uutoni urged the responsible maintenance of the newly established infrastructure by those entrusted with its care, and he called upon Tsumeb residents to diligently honor their municipal responsibilities. By doing so, the council can reinvest in the town’s development, particularly in underdeveloped and informal areas, he added.- Namibia Daily News

Prositution Growth in Katima Mulilo fuels alarming HIV Prevalence

By Elezo Libanda

Katima Mulilo, 5 August – In defiance of Namibian laws, prostitution continues to thrive in the Zambezi region, with many young women engaging in the trade to earn a living. NDN reporters observed a significant number of young women at various hotspots around the town of Katima Mulilo, particularly at the Fuel Service Station, where long-haul truck drivers form a substantial clientele base.

Upon closer investigation, it became evident that even foreigners who have illegally entered Namibia are involved in soliciting clients for this illicit trade, putting their lives and health at risk for a moment that could potentially change their lives forever.

One young woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared her experience. She mentioned that health workers, especially from the Walvis Bay corridor group, occasionally visit them and provide health kits, including condoms. However, they have to be cautious, as the police often intervene and remove them from their operating places, such as the area between Zambezi Shell and Engine Service Station at Katima Mulilo.

Regarding clients who refuse to use protection, the young woman acknowledged that there are times when she insists on it. However, she also highlighted the dilemma of potentially losing a high-paying client, emphasizing that some clients are willing to pay a significant sum, ranging from 500 to 800 Namibian dollars, depending on their needs and preferences. She admitted that she had never been tested for HIV but was monitoring her health closely.

Another middle-aged woman shared her perspective, expressing a preference for “Quickies” over longer encounters due to her responsibilities as a mother. She lamented the difficult circumstances that led them to engage in such activities, often being approached by much younger men whom they felt compelled to please. Some unfortunate incidents involve clients refusing to pay after services are rendered, leading to risky situations for the women involved.

The issue of prostitution becomes even more alarming when considering the HIV prevalence rates in the region. Earlier this year, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, the Minister of Health and Social Services, reported that certain regions in Namibia are experiencing higher rates of HIV prevalence compared to others. Zambezi Region takes the lead with a prevalence rate of 21.6%, followed by Oshkoto at 17.1%, Omusati at 15%, Kavango East and West both at 14.7%, Oshana at 14.5%, and Ohangwena at 14.3%. ~Namibia Daily News

This revelation came to light during the inauguration ceremony of the Narraville Elderly Home, a pioneering establishment designed to cater to the needs and well-being of senior citizens.

Dr. Muinjangue underscored a remarkable demographic transition underway in Africa, with the number of individuals aged 60 and above projected to surge from 65 million in 2018 to a staggering 220 million by the year 2050. She cited estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), indicating that 5.8% of Namibia’s populace falls within this age bracket. This statistic underscores the nation’s escalating demand for facilities catering to the elderly.

The event garnered the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Hon. Derek Klazen, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, along with representatives from regional and local government bodies.

Highlighting the crucial importance of elderly care, Dr. Muinjangue pointed out that the increasing necessity for such facilities is a result of shifts in traditional family structures and social support networks. She emphasized, “It is our responsibility to extend these essential amenities to the elderly.”

The Narraville Elderly Home, envisioned to comprise 58 units, a fully equipped hall with a kitchen, and a medical center, is poised to be a contemporary facility meticulously crafted for Walvis Bay’s community. Dr. Muinjangue expressed her unwavering belief that the establishment would offer essential refuge and foster a societal metamorphosis for the elderly residents. This groundbreaking policy is designed to safeguard not only the health of senior citizens but also their intergenerational roles, wisdom, and contributions across various socio-economic, cultural, and religious spheres within the community.

Drawing inspiration from Betty Friedan, the deputy minister urged attendees to view aging as a phase brimming with potential and resilience, rather than a period of decline. “Aging is not ‘lost youth’ but a new stage of opportunity and strength,” she echoed, encouraging all to embrace this life stage with a perspective rooted in empowerment and enrichment.- Namibia Daily News

Farmers Meat Reopens its Doors with a Flourish of Economic Optimism

By Mupiri Matthias

Windhoek, August 4 – A momentous occasion unfolded as Farmers Meat, a subsidiary of the esteemed Hartlief Group and part of the illustrious Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group portfolio, celebrated the grand reopening of its doors following a substantial investment of N$3 million in restoration efforts and an additional N$40 million in working capital. The auspicious event was graced by the esteemed presence of Honorable Calle Schlettwein, Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform. In his address, Minister Schlettwein underscored the pivotal role of unlocking the economic potential embedded within Namibia’s agricultural sector.

The reopening of Farmers Meat symbolizes not merely a reinvigoration of its operational essence but a profound paradigm shift in the nation’s economic landscape. The Honorable Minister articulated how the infusion of value-addition activities propels the country away from a trade-centered reliance on raw materials, toward a more promising trajectory of trading in refined finished products. He passionately affirmed, “Our collective policy and strategic interventions over the years have gradually shifted our country from being an exporter of live animals to becoming an exporter of value-added agricultural goods, and Farmers Meat plays a pivotal role in this collective endeavor.”

The Governor of the Hardap Region, Hon. Rev. Salomon April, seized the occasion to express his unwavering commitment to fostering employment opportunities and enhancing regional infrastructure. Commending the enterprising initiative of Hartlief and the O&L Group, April extolled their commendable investment in the region. He also underscored the indispensable need for a symbiotic partnership between the public and private sectors, accentuating that collaborative efforts are essential for realizing enduring economic prosperity.

April resonantly remarked, “Today, we also express our heartfelt gratitude to Hartlief and the O&L Group for their investment in our region. Their commitment and capital injection have not only brought economic prosperity but have also created much-needed employment opportunities for our residents. We commend their vision and foresight in recognizing the potential of our region and their dedication to contributing to its growth. As we celebrate the re-opening of Farmers Meat, we envision a future where our region thrives economically, where our people are empowered and prosperous. Let us work hand in hand, embracing collaboration and innovation to harness the full potential of the Hardap Region.”

The esteemed occasion was graced by the presence of Wessie van der Westhuizen, Chief Executive Officer of O&L Group and Chairman of the Hartlief Group. Van der Westhuizen expounded upon the principles of sustainable development, technological advancement, and inclusive growth. The reopening, which took place in October 2022, has already exerted a remarkable influence, exemplified by the disbursement of over N$75 million to sheep producers between October 2022 and June 2023.

Van der Westhuizen articulated, “The reopening of Farmers Meat in October 2022 has already made a remarkable impact. As the biggest sheep abattoir operation in Namibia and the only approved exporter of sheep meat in the country, we have paid over N$75 million to sheep producers between October 2022 and June 2023. This showcases our commitment to supporting local farmers and fostering economic development within our communities. Our ambitions for Farmers Meat are substantial. For the 2023 calendar year, we plan to process 55,000 sheep. Looking ahead, in 2024, we aim to handle between 100,000 and 170,000 sheep, which will require further investment. By 2025, we envision reaching full production capacity, processing 280,000 sheep. This will necessitate additional investments which we are only too willing to make. Hence, the abattoir will be temporarily shut down for the period from the 7th of August until the 4th of September 2023 to allow for significant maintenance, improvements, upgrades, and investment to the plant.”

The profound journey toward achieving optimal production capacity has already begun to bear fruit, with the exceptional quality of Namibian lamb permeating international markets, including Norway, Germany, and the Bermuda Islands. As the abattoir gears up to ascend to full production prowess by 2025, it will undergo a temporary closure for maintenance and strategic upgrades from August 7th to September 4th, 2023.

Trevor du Toit, General Manager of Farmers Meat, extended gratitude to all those who contributed to the reopening’s success and expressed heartfelt appreciation to O&L and Hartlief for their unwavering support. He articulated, “We are extremely proud of this achievement and grateful to everyone who made it possible. This reopening marks a significant milestone in our journey, and we look forward to continuing to make a positive impact on the Namibian meat industry and specifically the sheep sector. Your belief in the vision and potential of our abattoir has played an integral role in making our dream a reality.” The remarkable celebration of Farmers Meat’s reopening serves as a powerful testament to the unwavering commitment to advancing the nation’s economic prosperity and fostering a future of shared success. – Namibia Daily News
