Hyphen Targets 90% Namibian Employment and 30% Local Procurement for Green Hydrogen Project

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, Aug. 14 – In a significant stride towards establishing Namibia as a global leader in the green hydrogen sector, Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Hyphen) has announced a strategic partnership with ILF Consulting Engineers (ILF), a renowned independent international engineering and consulting firm. This collaboration aims to support the realization of a groundbreaking green hydrogen project.

Under this partnership, ILF, recognized for its extensive experience in large-scale energy and pipeline projects, will play a pivotal role by offering project management services, technical expertise, procurement, and contract advisory for Hyphen’s project in Namibia. Additionally, ILF will provide invaluable insights for the project’s implementation, aligning with Hyphen’s socio-economic development objectives.

Notable among ILF’s accomplishments in the hydrogen arena are its contributions to Canada’s first-ever green hydrogen project, the engineering and design of a hydrogen pipeline system in Finland, and the design of a hydrogen plant in Austria.

Marco Raffinetti, CEO of Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, expressed excitement about the partnership, emphasizing ILF’s wealth of experience in hydrogen projects globally. This collaboration will be instrumental in adhering to project timelines and meeting Namibia’s development objectives. Raffinetti further highlighted the strong interest from potential consortium partners, underscoring Namibia’s position as an attractive destination for investment in large-scale green hydrogen projects.

Dr. Michel Kneller, Director of Hydrogen at ILF, echoed this sentiment, stating that the venture with Hyphen represents a significant lighthouse project. By providing engineering and project management consultancy (PMC) services, ILF contributes to the energy transition, recognizing hydrogen’s pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future.

Hyphen’s project, one of the largest green hydrogen initiatives on a global scale, aims to decarbonize Namibia’s energy systems while also serving international markets. The project’s ambitious goals include an annual production target of one million tonnes of green ammonia by 2027, with plans to increase production to two million tonnes by 2029, leading to a reduction of 5-6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. At full-scale operation, the project could generate 350,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

Located in Tsau // Khaeb National Park, this project serves as a blueprint for future green hydrogen initiatives worldwide. It aligns with the Namibian Government’s strategic vision of establishing a large-scale green hydrogen industry, aiming to bolster economic growth in Namibia through a substantial US$10 billion investment, roughly equivalent to Namibia’s annual GDP.

Anticipated to create up to 15,000 new jobs during the construction phase and 3,000 permanent jobs during operation, Hyphen’s project strives for around 90% of these positions to be filled by Namibians. Furthermore, the project sets a target of 30% local procurement for goods, services, and materials throughout both the construction and operational phases.

Rising Poaching Cases Pose Threat to Wildlife

By Elezo Libanda

Katima Mulilo, August 14 – The concerning increase in poaching cases highlights the growing trend of wildlife crime turning into a profitable business for some members of the community. The poaching activities have expanded beyond mere meat consumption, with animals being targeted for various reasons. Elephants are poached for their ivory, tigers for their skins and bones, and numerous other species are also being overexploited.

Despite substantial efforts by the government and private organizations, which have invested millions to protect wildlife, rampant poaching incidents persist across the country. In February 2023, the Namibian government disclosed that rhino poaching had reached a record high in 2022, soaring by 93 percent compared to 2021. The toll stood at 87 rhinos killed in 2022—61 black rhinos and 26 white rhinos—compared to 45 in the previous year.

A significant portion of the reported poaching occurrences have been concentrated in Etosha, Namibia’s largest national park. In various other regions of the country, poaching for meat products remains a continuing concern. Well-funded criminal syndicates are often behind these efforts, with some successfully bribing individuals tasked with protecting wildlife to gain specialized information. Despite the presence of heavily armed forces in places like Etosha, the poaching of rhinos has, at times, escalated, raising questions about the effectiveness of protective measures.

In the Zambezi Region, two government employees were recently apprehended over the weekend for possession of game meat, unlicensed firearms, and ammunition, among other charges. The duo is expected to appear today in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court. -Namibia Daily News

Mboti, Chief Executive Officer of the Namibian African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), recently embarked on a fact-finding mission to Ghana to gain in-depth knowledge of the country’s successful implementation of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and its robust civic education program.

The delegation engaged with officials from Ghana’s National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the National Governing Council of the APRM-Ghana, and other prominent state institutions. The focus of the discussions centred on Ghana’s extensive experience in effectively implementing the APRM, a voluntary framework established among African nations for governance and development assessments at the Head of State peer level.

Ghana, one of the founding members of the APRM, has been actively participating in the program since 2003, successfully completing two cycles of review and currently preparing for its third cycle.

The Namibian delegation expressed a keen interest in understanding how Ghana has seamlessly integrated the APRM into its national governance system. The NCCE plays a pivotal role in this integration process, and the Namibian delegation was particularly intrigued by the Commission’s efforts in raising awareness of the APRM and fostering collaboration with civil society organizations.

Furthermore, the Namibian delegation was keen on learning from Ghana’s exemplary civic education program. With the NCCE as the driving force behind promoting civic education in Ghana, the delegation eagerly absorbed insights into the Commission’s methodologies and strategies.

Impressed by Ghana’s accomplishments in APRM implementation and civic education, the Namibian delegation is confident in leveraging this newfound knowledge to elevate the APRM-Namibia initiative to a success story.

New Airline Fly Etosha Plans to Compete with FlyNamibia

By Staff Reporter

WINDHOEK, AUG. 14 – Excitement is building in Namibia as Fly Etosha, a fledgling airline founded by Captain William Ekandjo, the former figure behind the now-defunct national carrier Air Namibia, prepares to launch operations in the coming months. The airline’s ambitious vision aims to enhance Namibia’s aviation landscape, focusing on various domestic routes and expanding into South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Fly Etosha, aptly named after the renowned Namibian game park, seeks to establish its presence and contribute to the growth of the country’s aviation sector. Despite initial concerns voiced by FlyNamibia, often considered the de facto national airline, the objections were quickly withdrawn after encountering a notable public backlash in February.

In his interviews with Namibian media outlets, Captain William Ekandjo outlined the forthcoming airline’s strategy, which includes servicing several domestic destinations alongside regional routes to South Africa and Zimbabwe. While Fly Etosha’s air service license and AOC (Air Operator Certificate) are yet to be secured, Ekandjo remains optimistic about the venture’s potential.

Ekandjo’s plans encompass a diverse fleet, with a reported interest in a range of 21 aircraft types, spanning from Cessna Grand Caravans to ATR 72s and Fokker 50s. He emphasized the availability of suitable regional aircraft for acquisition or leasing, aiming to facilitate the start-up process.

With a pragmatic approach, Ekandjo envisions the airline commencing international services within two years after its inaugural flight, hinting at an optimistic timeline for the ambitious endeavour.

While the challenges of launching a new airline and competing with the established FlyNamibia are significant, the aspirations of Fly Etosha have stirred significant excitement within Namibia. Observers await the forthcoming developments, curious to witness the new airline’s impact on the country’s aviation industry.
