Youth Voices of Frustration Amidst Unemployment Woes

By Elezo Libanda

Katima Mulilo, Aug. 15 – In a recent event held in Okahao, the Urban and Rural Development Minister once again advised the youth to seek self-employment, as the government cannot accommodate everyone. However, this statement has sparked widespread outrage among the youth, who feel neglected and abandoned amidst Namibia’s alarming unemployment rates.

The Minister’s statement has gone viral on social media, triggering an outpouring of frustration from the youth. Many expressed their disappointment in the leadership, highlighting the difficulties they face in finding opportunities to utilize their vocational training. Registering a company in Namibia is costly, and acquiring tenders often appears reserved for those with political connections.

Simataa Martin conveyed his discontent, stating, “We view the sentiments of the Minister as an insult to our intelligence.” The youth feel that their leaders only remember them during elections and have failed to provide adequate support or resources to enable them to start successful businesses.

Maswahu Albertina shared similar sentiments, emphasizing that the ageing leaders have not initiated the businesses they now expect the youth to establish. She pointed out the irony of being told to start businesses without any support, highlighting the prevailing sense of hopelessness among the youth.

The current financial year saw the Urban and Rural Development Ministry receiving an allocation of N$1.9 billion. Out of this, N$1.2 billion was dedicated to subsidizing operations at regional, local, and traditional councils.

As youth dissatisfaction grows, leaders are facing increased scrutiny over their handling of the country’s unemployment crisis and the perceived lack of support for the younger generation. – Namibia Daily News

Trump indicted over 2020 election interference in Georgia

WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump was indicted in Georgia on Monday over his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state, local media reported.

It’s the fourth criminal case to be brought against the former president.

Trump and 18 others were criminally charged in the southeastern U.S. state in connection with efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, reported The Washington Post, one of the leading newspapers in the country, citing an indictment made public late Monday night.

Trump was charged with 13 counts, including violating the state’s racketeering act, soliciting a public officer to violate their oath, conspiring to impersonate a public officer, conspiring to commit forgery in the first degree, and conspiring to file false documents.

The indictment follows a two-and-a-half-year investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The probe was launched after audio leaked from a January 2021 phone call during which Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to question the validity of thousands of ballots, especially in the heavily Democratic Atlanta area. Trump said he wanted to “find” the votes to erase his 2020 loss in the state, according to the report.

In total, there are 41 charges brought against 19 defendants in the 98-page indictment. Among those charged are Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor who served as Trump’s personal attorney after the election, Trump’s former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows; and several Trump advisers, including attorneys John Eastman and Kenneth Chesebro, who were architects of a scheme to create slates of alternate Trump electors, said the report. Zambian Man Receives Lengthy Sentence for Incestuous Crime

By Elezo Libanda

Katima Mulilo, 14 August – A man from Linda Township, Lusaka, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison, possibly keeping him incarcerated until his 90s, after being found guilty of repeatedly defiling his own daughter, resulting in her pregnancy and the birth of a son.

Roderick Nyambe, a 49-year-old farmer, was convicted of incest, which involves engaging in sexual activity with a blood relative knowingly. The High Court handed down the sentence following Nyambe’s conviction in a lower court.

The presiding judge, Catherine Phiri, strongly admonished the convict for his reprehensible behavior, which spanned over a period of about eight years. She expressed disgust at Nyambe’s explanation that he committed the acts with his daughter to bring wealth to himself and his family.

Judge Phiri dismissed his claim that a witch doctor provided him with charms to achieve riches as unfathomable. She labeled his actions as barbaric and stated, “From his disgusting and criminal conduct, the convict has destroyed not only the life of his own daughter but also the life of an innocent child. The stigma that will attach to the life of the child born to him and his daughter will take a lot of effort to normalize. We leave it only to God to be present in the life of this child.”

The judge emphasized the need for a stringent sentence as a deterrent for others who might contemplate such heinous acts. Nyambe was sentenced to 50 years in prison from the date of his arrest.

The series of sexual crimes were committed at various times between January 1, 2013, and December 2021, with allegations that Nyambe’s wife allegedly consented to the acts.

The case highlights the commitment of the Zambian legal system to address and condemn crimes of this nature, ensuring justice and protection for victims.- Namibia Daily News

Ministry of Health and Social Services Faces Scrutiny

By Elezo Libanda

Katima Mulilo, 14 August- Despite winning the award for best service provider at the recent Africa Public Service Day in Katima Mulilo, the Ministry of Health and Social Services has been facing criticism on various fronts. Concerns raised by the public and healthcare personnel have shed light on potential challenges within the Ministry, ranging from infrastructure issues to resource shortages.

Reports have emerged about dilapidated buildings within the Ministry, a shortage of ambulances, and even a lack of uniforms for nurses, who are reportedly compelled to purchase their own attire. The situation has been further compounded by the cutting of overtime hours and the imposition of a strict 40-hour workweek for staff, despite the mounting demands on them, especially during emergencies.

The National Council Standing Committee on Public Health has conducted assessments across the country, revealing alarming issues within the Ministry. In the Kavango region, there are concerns of potentially wasted funds due to the disposal of medicines believed to have been spoiled due to poor ventilation. Similarly, the Zambezi region has raised questions about the expenditure of N$90,000.00 per trip for private ambulances to transport patients from Katima to Windhoek. Reports from Nkurenkuru highlight the deplorable state of a maternity building.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services holds the crucial responsibility of implementing policies and providing primary healthcare to Namibians. The Namibian healthcare system comprises various components, including intermediate and referral hospitals, clinics, health centers, and district hospitals. Each component plays a distinct role with specialized medical staff.

While the Ministry’s recognition as a service provider is commendable, the highlighted issues underscore the need for urgent attention and improvements to ensure the provision of quality healthcare services across Namibia. Addressing these challenges is vital for the well-being of both healthcare professionals and the general public.-Namibia Daily News
