Namibia to host World Cup qualifiers in Botswana under new agreement

WINDHOEK, July 7– The Namibia Football Association (NFA) announced Sunday evening that it has entered into an agreement with the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to host its upcoming international home matches in Francistown, Botswana.

Namibia will play its 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification home games at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, effective immediately, according to Cassius Moetie, NFA interim general secretary.

The agreement comes amid ongoing infrastructure challenges in Namibia, where the country’s main stadiums have struggled to meet international standards.

Moetie said the partnership followed consultations between the two associations and reflects a shared commitment to advancing football development in the region.

“We are pleased to confirm this cooperation with the Botswana Football Association, which allows us to proceed with our home fixtures in a venue that meets FIFA requirements,” he said.

In the same statement, Mfolo Mfolo, BFA general secretary, confirmed the arrangement and expressed Botswana’s support for its neighbors and fellow members of the African football community.

“We will work closely with the NFA to ensure that all arrangements, including stadium preparedness, logistics, security and medical support, meet international standards,” Mfolo said.

Namibia is scheduled to face Malawi and Sao Tome and Principe in World Cup qualifiers in September. (Xinhua)

Musk announces new political party in U.S.

LOS ANGELES, July 7  — Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced Saturday that “the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” following an online poll he launched earlier in the week that showed strong support for a new political force.

“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system,” Musk wrote in Friday’s post announcing the poll.

More than 65 percent of the 1.2 million respondents backed the idea. Responding to the results on Saturday, Musk wrote, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.”

Musk said the America Party will laser-focus on two or three Senate seats and eight to 10 House districts, a strategy he believes could tip control in a narrowly divided Congress.

But election-law experts note the high barriers to entry for new parties. In California, organizers must either register about 75,000 members or collect 1.1 million signatures to appear on ballots.

Political strategists suggest Musk‘s announcement may be aimed more at pressuring lawmakers than building a durable third party.

The move follows the passage of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, which cut electric vehicle incentives and increased federal spending — measures that Musk, whose company Tesla benefits from EV subsidies, has opposed.

Musk has threatened to fund challengers to lawmakers who supported the bill. Trump, in turn, has hinted at reassessing what he called “billions in subsidies” tied to Musk-linked ventures.

Analysts say Musk‘s move appears more like a high-profile bargaining tactic than the beginning of a major shake-up of the U.S. political system. (Xinhua)

BRICS grouping opportunity to create fairer world order: Malaysian PM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — The BRICS grouping, which has emerged as a strong and principled force, represents an opportunity to shape a more balanced and just international order, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has said.

Legacy international organizations need to be reformed to reflect the changing global realities and to take into account the aspirations of developing nations, Anwar said in a statement.

“I also call for a major overhaul of global institutions such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization, to better reflect current realities and the needs of developing countries, rather than remaining trapped in outdated post-World War II structures,” he said.

Anwar, who was attending the 17th BRICS Summit hosted by Brazil, added that the grouping must strengthen its economic cooperation both among member states and with other regional groupings such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“BRICS and ASEAN members must also continue to strengthen strategic cooperation, including enhancing cross-regional trade and investment for the mutual benefit of developing nations,” he said. (Xinhua)

Southern African countries urged to embrace inclusive development

WINDHOEK, July 6 — Southern African countries should dismantle policy silos and embrace cross-sector collaboration to address social inclusion and sustainability challenges, a senior Namibian official said on Sunday.

Speaking at the Inter-Ministerial Forum on Inclusion and Sustainability for Ministers of Education, Health and Sport in Windhoek, Namibian Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture Sanet Steenkamp emphasized the need for coordinated policymaking across health, education, and sport ministries to ensure no segment of society is left behind.

“A child cannot succeed in school if they are unwell. A youth cannot thrive in sport without mental and physical support. And no system is complete if it excludes people living with disabilities,” said Steenkamp.

The forum brought together ministers from nine Southern African countries, along with representatives from the African Union Commission, international sports bodies, and development partners, with the aim of strengthening regional collaboration on inclusion, particularly for youth and individuals with disabilities.

Steenkamp noted that nearly 60 percent of the region’s population is made up of young people, while more than 17 million people live with disabilities.

She also called for these demographics to be integrated into national development planning through joint efforts across ministries.

“Our work is interconnected,” she said. “We cannot afford to work in silos. The best solutions come from collaboration, across ministries, across borders, and with our youth, our communities, and our partners.” The minister further urged participants to move beyond dialogue and commit to practical outcomes, including shared goals and timelines. Monsoon rains kill 66, injure 127 in 10 days across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, July 5 — Torrential monsoon rains and flash floods have claimed at least 66 lives and injured 127 others across Pakistan since June 26, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Saturday.

The NDMA confirmed two additional deaths and 10 injuries from rain-related incidents over the past two days, as extreme weather continues to batter parts of the country.

According to the NDMA, the heaviest toll was reported from northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where 24 people, including 11 children, lost their lives.

Fourteen of them were swept away in a flash flood in the Swat Valley last week. In Punjab, 22 people, including 11 children, were killed as heavy rains triggered house collapses and flash floods.

Sindh reported 15 fatalities, while five people died in Balochistan. Three injuries were also reported in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Amid ongoing downpours, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and thunderstorms over the next 48 hours in several regions. (Xinhua)

Government Faces Criticism Over Biased Distribution of Advertising Contracts.

By Shikuva Kapumburu

WINDHOEK, July 5 — The Government has long disregarded the complaints of private media regarding the exclusion from government and parastatal advertising tenders, which are disproportionately awarded to government media and a select few private media houses, revealing a troubling pattern reminiscent of corrupt practices involving certain senior officials and specific media outlets that consistently benefit from government contracts.

Experts suggest that this unjust allocation of resources, which has persisted for quite some time, may have contributed to Namibia recently losing its previously held top position in Press Freedom to South Africa, dropping down to sixth place.

There are evident barriers between government operations and private media, which severely limit private entities from accessing government and parastatal advertising opportunities while their ongoing grievances remain neglected.

Certain media outlets have accused the government of ineffective communication and lack of coordination with all media organizations regarding government matters.

“For instance, how can someone hold the position of Minister of Information for a decade, which amounts to 3,650 days, yet fail to schedule a single meeting with media organizations to discuss their perspectives or concerns?” stated an editor from a private media outlet, speaking anonymously due to lack of authority to represent the media house.

“The level of coordination in South Africa regarding public information dissemination, especially during national events, is excellent; cameras don’t oppose each other as they do in Namibia. The South African National Broadcasting can capture the footage and subsequently share the links with all media,” he continued.

Additionally, he commended NBC’s coverage during national events, such as state funerals, while emphasizing the importance of sharing this coverage with private media for cohesive and high-quality reporting to the public, given that they are funded by taxpayers.

The outgoing Media Ombudsman, John Nakuta, was recently cited by Confidante newspaper acknowledging that smaller media organizations are struggling to stay afloat despite their significant contributions to ongoing public discourse.

“This is an appeal for the government to ensure that the distribution of advertising funding is done more fairly, so as to encompass privately-owned media. This is essential for maintaining a diverse media landscape in Namibia,” Nakuta stated.

Some believe that the lack of regulation regarding how the government manages media contracts presents substantial opportunities for corruption among certain senior government officials and specific media outlets.

Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare was also quoted in the same Confidante article, affirming that the government must fully support Namibian enterprises to prevent the loss of vital jobs abroad. Namibia Daily News, which is a fully owned Namibian company and one of the seven accredited private media organizations facing difficulties securing government contracts, attempted to reach Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus for comment before publication, but her mobile phone remained unanswered-Namibia Daily News

BRICS strengthens momentum, stability in Global South cooperation

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 5  — The 17th BRICS Summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6-7, marking a new chapter in which BRICS energizes and promotes the sound and steady growth of cooperation among Global South countries.

As the rotating chair of the bloc, Brazil is hosting the summit under the banner of “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”

In recent years, BRICS has transformed into a major force fostering cooperation among Global South nations.

This collaboration not only advances their economic and social progress, but also offers alternative approaches to global governance and new models for modernization.

RESHAPING GLOBAL ECONOMIC ORDER Five BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, established the New Development Bank (NDB) in 2014.

Headquartered in Shanghai, the NDB officially began operations in 2015 to fulfill its mission of mobilizing resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS member nations, as well as other emerging-market economies and developing countries.

With the NDB, BRICS has fostered international development by bringing together dynamic economies committed to the transformation of the Global South.

The bank offers “financing on more favorable terms for infrastructure, energy and transportation projects,” said Sebastian Schulz, a sociologist and researcher at the National University of La Plata in Argentina, noting that BRICS also provides a Contingency Reserve Arrangement, which could help with “stabilizing economies in the context of currency crises.”

“BRICS acts as one of the main spaces for joint undertakings within the Global South, fostering discussions in pursuit of more equitable global governance, reforms to the international financial architecture, and a more just form of multipolarity,” he said.

Patricio Giusto, director of the Sino-Argentine Observatory, noted that BRICS offers the world, particularly the Global South, “financing programs that are being developed through the NDB and other specific programs.”

BRICS, with its multilateral forums, offers a favorable framework for economic cooperation among the Global South countries “with increasingly converging interests and concerns,” Giusto told Xinhua.

“From an initial agenda focused primarily on financial cooperation in the post-2008 and 2009 crisis, the bloc grew in geopolitical and economic relevance, now with an increasingly diverse agenda and global reach,” said Giusto, adding that BRICS “is currently on the rise, with more and more members and opportunities in trade and investment.”

Reflecting the bloc’s growing influence, Colombia celebrated its entry into the NDB in June, which “goes beyond the financial sphere and broadens our horizons” as described by Colombian Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia.

Over the past decade, the NDB has approved over 120 projects totaling 40 billion U.S. dollars, providing financing support for member countries in a wide range of fields, including infrastructure, clean energy, environmental protection, and digital infrastructure.

STABILIZING FORCE AMID GLOBAL UNCERTAINTY With more countries joining BRICS, the mechanism’s representativeness and influence have steadily grown, forging a stabilizing force in a changing and turbulent world.

BRICS represents a strategic partnership of nations that together constitute a significant part of the world’s population and economy.

The group’s expansion has continuously increased its influence in the international arena, making it more representative with a greater capacity to advance various global agendas.

In an interview with Xinhua, Bolivian President Luis Arce praised BRICS for providing a new platform for Global South countries to participate in global governance, defend their development rights, and amplify their voice in international affairs.

“The BRICS cooperation mechanism offers us a new model of development and a new vision of genuine multilateralism.

It offers a completely different vision where all of us can feel part of a collective effort, where we can cooperate for common development,” said Arce, stressing the “important milestone” for Bolivia as it became a BRICS partner country in January.

Yu Yunquan, vice president of the China International Communications Group, said that with its expanded cooperation, BRICS should actively promote an equitable and orderly global multipolarization, as well as inclusive and mutually beneficial economic globalization.

“Cooperation among the BRICS countries is not only a response to the current economic and political landscape, but also an opportunity to forge a more equitable and sustainable future,” said Ivone Silva, president of the Lula Institute of Brazil.

Boris Guseletov, senior researcher at the Institute of European Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that the integrated development of global governance is crucial to addressing the new challenges of international cooperation.

“The world has entered a new phase of major turbulent changes, and the international order is undergoing a significant reorganization.

Following its expansion, the BRICS mechanism will unite efforts to promote common development, defend multilateralism, and contribute more to building a more equitable global governance system,” he said.

DRIVING KEY TECH INNOVATION The upcoming BRICS Summit is expected to focus on a wide range of major issues facing humanity today, from international governance and economic affairs to climate change and global health, as well as the challenges created by artificial intelligence (AI).

The bloc is striving to transform technological innovation into a driving force for the development of Global South countries and their presence on the global stage.

A ministerial declaration was issued last week on BRICS cooperation in science, technology, and innovation in Brasilia, Brazil, emphasizing the importance of expanding access to and the mastery of technologies and innovations for countries in the Global South.

BRICS countries can pave the way for digital sovereignty for the Global South by developing their own technologies and reducing dependence on traditional tech giants, said Luca Belli, law professor at Brazil’s Getulio Vargas Foundation.

“Homegrown digital technologies can break dependence and lead to autonomy and self-determination,” Belli said, highlighting that BRICS countries have offered viable alternatives to the digital model centered on large U.S. corporations.

“China went from being a technologically underdeveloped country to a leader in artificial intelligence in just a few decades. India is building powerful public digital infrastructures.

Brazil has been a pioneer in promoting free software as a form of digital sovereignty since 2003,” he said.

Innovation is the process of translating scientific discoveries into tangible products and services, which could be accelerated by the exchange of all kinds of tools available among countries, said Brazilian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Luciana Santos.

“We have shared our experiences on how we are investing in the growth of innovation, bearing in mind that when it comes to our country’s economic growth and stability, everything is rooted in innovation,” said South African Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Nomalungelo Gina. Namibia reports over 260,000 cyber incidents in Q1 2025

WINDHOEK, July 5– Namibia recorded more than 260,000 cyber incidents between January and March 2025, marking a 314 percent increase from the previous quarter, according to a report released on Friday.

Published in the first edition of the Cybersecurity Quarterly Newsletter by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia, the report also noted 540,786 cyber vulnerabilities during the same period, representing a 15.6 percent decrease compared to the previous quarter.

The report documented several case studies, including the use of a deepfake video, falsely attributed to the Bank of Namibia, to promote a fraudulent investment scheme.

In another incident, a Namibian woman lost over 800,000 Namibian dollars (about 45,499 U.S. dollars) after unknowingly allowing a scammer remote access to her device using legitimate software.

According to the report, artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasing role in cyberattacks, with AI-generated phishing emails and adaptive ransomware identified as key emerging threats.

These technologies have made attacks more sophisticated and harder to detect, posing growing challenges for conventional cybersecurity measures, the report said.

Institutions were urged to strengthen cyber hygiene, restrict public exposure to outdated services, and improve third-party risk management, while industries were encouraged to establish sector-specific incident response teams. (Xinhua)
