SIEM REAP, Cambodia, Nov. 8 — More than 5,000 participants gathered at the historic Bakong Temple in the Angkor Archaeological Park in northwestern Cambodia on Sunday for a celebratory fun run marking World Children’s Day.
The event united children, families, government representatives, development partners, artists and local influencers to advocate for children’s rights and active youth participation. The day featured both 3-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs, alongside educational sessions focused on climate action, online safety, inclusion, mental health, healthy lifestyles, and civic engagement.
Maha Damaj, representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to Cambodia, emphasized that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Whether they live in a city, a floating community on the Tonle Sap Lake, or a village recovering from crisis, children must be at the center of our decisions and investments, she said at the event.
Damaj said global economic shocks, the climate crisis, online sexual exploitation and abuse, and growing mental health challenges all threaten the hard-won progress made for children over recent decades.
She called on the communities to ensure children can thrive in safe, healthy environments that foster creativity and protect their rights under all circumstances.
Participants also shared their excitement and messages of encouragement for the next generation.
Mao Bilita, a 23-year-old runner, said that the event successfully blended health advocacy with a joyful atmosphere.
“I am thrilled to see children coming together at this fun run to promote children’s rights,” she told Xinhua, urging youth to study hard for their futures.
“My message to children around the world is that there will always be people who listen to you, seek to understand you, and support you,” Bilita said.
Fellow runner Kun Sokhea, 24, echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of creating environments where children’s rights are fully honored and protected.
“To all Cambodian children, my message to you is: study hard, and always listen to the advice of your parents and teachers,” she said.(Namibia Daily News/Xinhua)
