Otjiwarongo Christian School joins in on World Cleanup Day

OTJIWARONGO, 15 SEP – Learners and teachers of the Otjiwarongo Christian School on Saturday cleaned their town’s central business district for World Cleanup Day.
World Cleanup Day sees nearly 150 countries around the world take action to combat the global solid waste problem.
Their group leader, Mercia Nel told Nampa about 30 learners had volunteered to participate.
They were joined by members of the Otjozondjupa Waste Management Forum.
“It is a fantastic feeling to keep our town clean. If we don’t do it, who will?” said Nel.
Grade 2 learner Julie Katuu said cleaning the environment should be the duty of every global citizen.
“I want to live in a neat town so that it can attract many tourists,” she said.
Zoe Nguvauva, who is in Grade 3 at the school, said cleaning gives her a sense of responsibility and reduces waste, which is harmful to the environment.
Angela Haikela said this sentiment needs to be instilled into every child so that they can grow up knowing the importance of keeping the earth clean in order for all living organisms in it to stay healthy.
Amitayi Shilunga, also a learner at the school, called on community members in the region to support cleanliness and hygiene to prevent outbreaks of diseases caused by poor hygiene.
The Otjiwarongo Christian School is a private school offering pre-primary to Grade 7.
