OMARURU, 21 APR – Omaruru will host more sporting events this year as a way of improving the socio-economic status of the town.
This was said by Erongo Region Sports Officer Berthold Karumendu on the side-lines of the 2018 Omaruru Spar Cycle Race, which took place along the Omaruru-Kalkfeld road on Saturday.
“We have just concluded the cycling event and we are now turning our attention to the Olympic Day which will take place here on 23 June,” he said.
The Olympic Day event will feature mini games such as football, basketball, volleyball and mountain bike cycling. It will conclude with a boxing bonanza, he said.
Karumendu added that the preparations are at an advanced stage.
He said they will start negotiations with Standard Bank’s local branch to sponsor the hosting of a beach volleyball tournament on 11 August, while in September there will be the annual Navachab Marathon and on 13 October, the famous Omaruru Street Mile.
“Last year we had international athletes for the Street Mile and we are hoping for more of these athletes in this year’s competition,” Karumendu said.
He added that hosting such events in small towns like Omaruru help to improve economic development as the visitors spend money when they participate.
It also helps to develop competitive athletes who can compete internationally and win medals.
