WINDHOEK, 16 AUG – The final leg of the 2018 Old Mutual Victory Race Series will take place here on Saturday.
This was confirmed on Thursday by Old Mutual Communications Practitioner Shekutaamba Nepembe, who said athletes can participate in the five kilometre (km) fun walk, 10 km race and the main 21 km race during the event that starts and ends at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.
He told Nampa there are exciting prizes to be won by participants, with the first five males and females in each category walking away with cash prizes.
“The overall female and male winners of the 21 km race will each walk away with N.dollars 15 000 and an all-expenses paid trip to participate in the 2019 Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town, South Africa. The athlete that comes second will walk away with N.dollars 10 000, while the third prize is N.dollars 5 000,” Nepembe explained.
The male and female winners of the junior category will win a N.dollars 12 000 bursary of which N.dollars 6 000 goes to education and the rest to sports development.
There will also be a prize for the disability group with the most participants, while the sports body with the most participants in matching uniforms will receive N.dollars 2 500.
Recently installed Old Mutual Victory Race Ambassador and 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Helalia Johannes is expected to participate.
The first leg of the series was held in Swakopmund in June, while the second leg was in Keetmanshoop in July.
The third leg was held in Oshakati, also last month.
Winners of this year’s Old Mutual Victory Races include Mynhardt Kauanivi, Sophia Nambambi, Kefas Kondjashili and Josephine Dumeni.
Old Mutual has been the main sponsor of the event for the past 18 years.
