GOBABIS, 31 OCT – Pio Nganate, Special Advisor to Omaheke Governor, Festus Ueitele, has called on local business to be geared towards growing beyond Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) status into large multi-nationals.
Nganate said it was sad that nearly three decades after independence, black business owners in Omaheke on average were yet to break grounds in owning large enterprises and are confined to SMEs.
He made the remarks during the official opening ceremony of the Omaheke Trade Fair here on Tuesday.
Nganate, who is also the Chairperson of the Omaheke Trade Fair, said it was high time black people in the region rise above only becoming consumers and take their share of the business market.
“We want black business people to actively penetrate the local market. It can never be business as usual; you need to wake up and do all you can to avoid only being consumers.”
Nganate said Namibian laws and legal instruments on business ownership are clearly defined and open to all Namibians, as such, locals need to exploit these opportunities and grow their businesses.
“The business sector needs to be coloured; just like the Namibian house. We cannot, in a region where black people are the majority, only have less than a handful of them competing actively in the mainstream of business enterprise in Omaheke,” Nganate emphasised.
He urged all business people in the region and beyond to make use of the trade and promotion opportunities accorded by the Omaheke Trade Fair to actively market their businesses, describing the trade fair as “a breeding ground for business”.
Nganate explained that the fair was back this year after a year’s absence, as it allowed the break to reinvent itself in an effort to better serve the business community.
