Swakopmund, Sept. 2 — Namibia will join other African countries to commemorate African Amnesty Month in September 2022, where citizens can surrender to authorities, all illicit and unwanted firearms, ammunition, and related materials without fear of prosecution.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration and safety, the government endorsed the month of September; for two years as amnesty month. This underscores the country’s commitment to the African Union Agenda 2063 aspiration for a peaceful and secure Africa.
An extraordinary session of the African heads of state and government was held on 06 December 2020 in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a recommitted session to the implementation of the AU Master Roadmap of Practical Steps for Silencing of Guns in Africa by the Year 2063 through the extension of the African Amnesty.
Last year Namibia undertook a process led by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security to ensure its full implementation.
To fulfill the objectives of Agenda 2063, Africa must seek to put an end to all wars, civil conflicts, gender-based violence, violent conflicts, and genocide.
The statement further highlighted that the Namibian government remains focused, and resolute and continues with the implementation of the letter of the decision of the 14th Extraordinary Session of the African Union on the silencing of guns in Africa.
The public is therefore urged to take advantage of this opportunity granted to them by the government from 1 to 30 September 2022, to surrender all illegal and unwanted firearms, ammunition, and related materials at police stations countrywide.
