WINDHOEK, 24 OCT – Team Namibia will this year add judo and volleyball to the sports codes they will compete in at the 2018 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Games in Gaborone, Botswana.
The AUSC Region Five Under-20 Games will take place from 06 to 18 December 2018 with Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe competing against each other.
A group of 153 athletes were selected during the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) Youth Games held in the capital earlier this year. They will compete in athletics, para-athletics, boxing, judo, netball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, football (male and female) and basketball (male).
Speaking during a local organising committee meeting held in the capital on Tuesday, Team Namibia’s Chef de Mission to the games, Anton Langerman said the names of the athletes have been handed over to the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Services and the NSC for final approval ahead of the games.
Team Namibia ended sixth overall with 40 medals at the 2016 AUSC Region Five Under-U20 Youth Games held in Luanda, Angola.
The team of 125 athletes competed in women’s football, track and field, boxing, basketball, netball, swimming, and tennis against nine other southern African countries.
The team includes athletes with disabilities.
Namibia collected five gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze medals.
South Africa were overall winners with 125 medals of which 63 were gold, followed by Botswana with 35 medals (14 gold); Zimbabwe third with 76 medals (12 gold); and Angola fourth with 33 medals (12 gold).
Lesotho finished off the top five positions with 16 medals (six gold).
Mozambique ended seventh with 22 medals (four gold); Zambia eighth with 15 medals (four gold); Malawi ninth with nine medals (no gold) and Swaziland 10th with one bronze medal.
