REHOBOTH, 29 JUN – Namibia has shown its commitment to combating desertification and land degradation by establishing a Sustainable Land Management Steering Committee, Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism Bernadette Jagger has said.
Speaking during the belated commemoration of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought at Rehoboth on Wednesday, she said the committee was established to ensure that the Third National Action Programme to Combat Desertification is successfully implemented.
The action plan falls under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and commits Namibia to the achievement of land degradation neutrality.
“With support from the UNCCD Secretariat, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism has participated in a pilot project on land degradation neutrality which assisted us to identify land degradation neutrality targets and land degradation hotspots,” Jagger said.
The deputy minister said around 70 per cent of Namibia’s population depends on natural resources for their livelihoods.
“We are seeing a decrease in fertility in our crop-growing areas, particularly for subsistence farming especially in the northern parts of the country, where over 60 per cent of the population resides. This is a result of unsustainable land practices,” Jagger stated.
She said in other parts of the country, cattle farming and agriculture farming in semi-arid areas offer a small-scale version of the challenges facing wider Namibia when it comes to issues of desertification, land degradation and drought.
Jagger added that in the last 30 years, Namibia has been affected by desertification and drought.
“As part of the long-term mitigating measures, Namibia, with technical assistance from UNCCD, is setting national targets to curb land degradation by the year 2024 through the third National Action Programme,” she said.
These targets include creating employment and giving households and communities a chance to live which will, in turn, strengthen the national food bank and Namibia’s future prospects for sustainability.
The deputy minister said Namibians should focus on effective ways to tackle land degradation and desertification.
“We need to recognise that these challenges are real in our societies and they require our collective intervention,” she said.
World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed on 17 June every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification.
