WINDHOEK, 01 OCT – In a quest to address land dispossession, the Ministry of Land Reform has spent about N$3.3 billion on acquiring farms since 1991.
This was said by Minister of Land Reform, Utoni Nujoma at the second National Land Conference which kicked off here on Monday.
Nujoma said the ministry acquired 549 farms measuring 3.2 million hectares and six million hectares through the ‘willing buyer, willing seller principle’ and Affirmative Action Loan Scheme programme respectively.
He said 5 338 families were resettled, while 119 227 customary land rights and 1 204 leasehold rights have been registered.
Nujoma further noted that Namibia held its first land conference in 1991, where there was a shared understanding of the magnitude of the implications of a century of historical land deprivation on the socio-economic and political being of the majority of Namibians.
“The 24 consensus resolutions that were agreed upon at the 1991 national conference on land reform and the land question read together with the Namibian Constitution have provided the solid foundation that informs and guides the ministry’s policy and legal framework on the land reform process for the past 27 years,” he said.
Around 800 delegates are attending the five-day National Land Conference, which amongst others will review the progress made towards the implementation of the 24 resolutions taken at the 1991 conference.
The ‘willing seller, willing buyer’ principle and ancestral land claims will also be discussed.
